SUMMARY:EduKIT: Using Data and Staff Development to Improve Pupil Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:This session explores how purposeful leadership can transform school culture\, systems\, and outcomes. On appointment as principal\, Dr Michelle Rainey led the introduction of new policies and procedures for tracking and intervention to raise attainment. Central to this work was reshaping culture\, developing staff\, and ensuring accountability at all levels. Through collaborative workshops with senior leaders\, middle leaders\, governors\, and staff\, a shared vision was built and embedded into a three-year School Development Plan. A tailored in-house CPD programme supported staff to grow confidence in data use\, coaching\, and leadership skills\, while ensuring workload and wellbeing remained priorities. This strategic\, inclusive approach not only improved pupil outcomes year-on-year but also created a sustainable culture of collaboration\, capacity building\, and professional growth. \n  \nRegistration:\nRSVP via the AoEA Hub – CLICK HERE TO RSVP \nIf you are not a member of the AoEA\, get in touch with us at info@aoea.co.uk to learn more about EduKITs and becoming a member of the AoEA.

SUMMARY:EduKIT: Restoring Order and Rebuilding Trust: Embedding Sustainable Behaviour Systems
DESCRIPTION:At Willow Wood Community Primary\, Headteacher Lindsay Robertson quickly realised that traditional behaviour strategies such as ladders\, sanctions and inconsistent rules were not only ineffective but damaging\, especially for children with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Change required more than a new policy – it needed a shift in mindset. \nThe school introduced a Self-Regulation and Behaviour Policy that prioritised consistency\, restorative practice and positive recognition. Staff training focused on understanding behaviour as communication\, setting the right emotional climate\, and using “emotional currency” to build trust. Leaders modelled the new systems before implementation\, giving staff confidence and clarity. \nEvery lesson became a fresh start\, behaviour was everyone’s responsibility\, and rules were simple\, consistent and values-driven. Over time\, behaviour incidents reduced significantly\, relationships improved\, and children began to reflect\, repair and self-regulate. The result: a calmer school\, stronger learning culture\, no exclusions since 2018\, and staff empowered to lead with compassion and consistency. \nIn this EduKIT\, Lindsay will reflect on laying the groundwork for change and the preparation needed when introducing new behaviour systems to an educational setting in crisis. \nRegistration:\nRSVP via the AoEA Hub – CLICK HERE TO RSVP \nIf you are not a member of the AoEA\, get in touch with us at info@aoea.co.uk to learn more about EduKITs and becoming a member of the AoEA.

SUMMARY:EduKIT: One Year On: Symbols\, Struggles and the Call to Educators
DESCRIPTION:A year has passed since riots unsettled some of our communities. While the visible unrest has subsided\, the deeper fractures remain. Across the UK\, flags continue to be raised and marches unfold weekly. For some\, these represent pride and identity. For others\, they trigger unease and exclusion. As an educator who has witnessed these divisions play out in our classrooms and corridors\, I’ve seen firsthand how these tensions ripple through our young people’s lives. \nThese moments stir complex emotions: pride\, belonging\, unease\, and sometimes fear. They remind us that symbols are never neutral they carry history\, meaning\, and consequence. As educators and leaders\, we cannot afford to stand on the sidelines. \nNow is the time to create intentional spaces for professional dialogue where we\, as leaders\, can gather to ask and answer difficult questions together: \nThe Questions We Must Ask and Answer \n\nHow do we help young people process complex emotions around identity and belonging when our own communities often feel divided?\nWhat practical steps can we take to address the deeper inequalities and mistrust that fuel these tensions?\nHow do we lead with both compassion and clarity when faced with symbols and narratives that divide our communities?\n\nThese are not abstract questions. They require us to examine our curriculum choices\, our response to playground tensions\, our parent engagement strategies\, and our own unconscious biases. \nThis work demands three core commitments: \nCourage: The willingness to have uncomfortable conversations and examine difficult truths about inequality and exclusion in our communities. \nHumility: Recognizing that we don’t have all the answers and that our young people may teach us as much as we teach them. \nSolidarity: Understanding that this cannot be individual work it requires sustained collaboration across schools\, communities\, and professional networks. \nThe Invitation \nThis is an opportunity to engage in a professional dialogue where educators can reflect honestly without judgment on our challenges and responsibilities. Together\, looking at practical approaches we can implement in our settings. \nSome of us may feel unprepared for this work. Others may question whether it’s truly our role. Many of us are already stretched thin. Some of us are exploring or managing successful approaches. Concerns are valid and important and they’re precisely why we need to support each other through structured\, professional dialogue. \nThis is not easy work. It requires us to resist the temptation of quick fixes and instead commit to the patient\, transformative work of building inclusive and resilient communities. But it also offers hope: the possibility that we can prepare our young people to navigate these realities with empathy\, wisdom\, and genuine understanding. \nThe question a year on is not simply how we respond to flags or marches. The real question is: how do we equip our young people to build the cohesive\, just communities we all want to see? \nThat answer begins with us and with the conversations we choose to have now. \n  \nRegistration:\nRSVP via the AoEA Hub – CLICK HERE TO RSVP \nIf you are not a member of the AoEA\, get in touch with us at info@aoea.co.uk to learn more about EduKITs and becoming a member of the AoEA.

SUMMARY:EduKIT: 'Where is my Car?' A Personal Guide to Mental Health Support for School Professionals
DESCRIPTION:During lockdown Jason Arbuckle\, Shared Education and Sectoral Support Officer\, was redeployed from Shared Education to support staff more widely in school improvement. During his phone and online discussions\, he discovered that many school leaders were feeling more and more isolated and showing signs of stress. As someone who had struggled with his mental health during his time as a school principal\, he felt compelled to do something about it. He retrained as a counsellor and structured an online course that allowed participants to interact with him and their peers at a time when support was limited. \nIn this EduKIT Jason will talk about the development of this course\, the impact it has had and the ongoing work in which he is engaged. Jason has presented in over 50 schools in Northern Ireland around the area of Mental Health. For headteachers and advisers supporting school leaders this will be an invaluable session. \nJason brings extensive experience as an educational professional. From his work as a school teacher and principal and then as an adviser in ICT he now works within the Education Authority of Northern Ireland in the field of Shared Education\, bringing together schools from different communities to work towards greater co-operation and understanding. He is also one of the Education Authority Health and Well-being Champions and Mental Health First Aiders and the author of ‘The Life of CH Lightoller’. \nRegistration:\nRSVP via the AoEA Hub – CLICK HERE TO RSVP \nIf you are not a member of the AoEA\, get in touch with us at info@aoea.co.uk to learn more about EduKITs and becoming a member of the AoEA.

DESCRIPTION:Making sense of the summer riots 86 days on – What’s changed? \nNarinder was invited to lead this EduKIT following the publication of a reflective article on LinkedIn after the rioting in the summer. It clearly resonated with a huge number of people\, and the big question emerging was ‘what has changed?’. Her last school was the subject of her recent publication Creating Change in Urban settings which charts the journey and impact of curriculum and leadership development during challenging times. She currently works 4 days a week as the School Improvement Director for Elevate Multi-academy Trust\, a Primary Trust based in North Yorkshire. \nNarinder is also a School Improvement Director for the Curriculum Foundation\, a not-for-profit foundation that provides curriculum-related support\, advice and guidance to schools\, school systems\, government organisations and ministries worldwide. Since 2015 Narinder has been working on the development of the Curriculum in South Sudan. As an accredited executive business coach\, Narinder has also worked alongside schools\, Trusts and the private sector to design and deliver bespoke leadership programmes with a focus upon optimising well-being and resilience. \nRegistration: \nRSVP below! \nAbout EduKITs: \nThe AoEA Education Keeping in Touch (EduKIT) meetings are designed for our members to listen to guest speakers\, share knowledge\, and discuss best practices. SUMMARY:EduKIT: Behaviour\, Behaviour\, Behaviour: The More You Talk About Poor Behaviour\, the More You Get
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an insightful EduKIT session titled “Behaviour\, Behaviour\, Behaviour: The More You Talk About Poor Behaviour\, the More You Get” presented by Jason Ashley. \nIn this session\, Jason will explore effective strategies for managing student behaviour in educational settings. Drawing from his extensive experience\, he will discuss how focusing on poor behaviour often perpetuates it and provide practical advice on fostering a positive behaviour culture. \nKey Topics: \n\nThe impact of school infrastructure and systems on behaviour\nThe role of staff skills\, inclusion\, and fair rules in behaviour management\nUnderstanding the reptilian brain and its influence on student behaviour\nThe importance of relationships\, warmth\, and humour in behaviour management\nStrategies for creating a high challenge/low threat school environment\nPractical tips for improving school behaviour culture\n\nFollowing the presentation\, there will be a dedicated question and answer period where attendees can engage with Jason\, ask questions\, and discuss topics raised during the session. This interactive segment offers an excellent opportunity to deepen your understanding and gain further insights into effective behaviour management. \nJason Ashley is a headteacher of 13 years at Redbridge Community School in Southampton. His school resides in a typically white working class area with high levels of deprivation; although this is never used as an excuse. \nJason has been a senior manager in three schools. He was firstly appointed into his first role in 2004. He is passionate about young people and they are always at the front of his decision making. He has led his work to ‘outstanding’; four times as a deputy and once as a headteacher in 2013 before being graded ‘requires improvement’ in 2016 (‘good’ for leadership and management)\, then ‘good’ in 2018 (with ‘outstanding’ personal development). A nod to his times in the armed forces. \nHe is a qualified Ofsted Inspector and his MA is based on how the curriculum motivates young people. He has worked with the DfE on behaviour strategies and guidance; and sees school inclusion as a strength – not a weakness. \nThe AoEA Keeping in Touch meeting is a way for members to listen to guest speakers\, share knowledge\, best practice and have a forum where you can discuss with your peers any areas of concern or support you require. \nOur members will automatically receive calendar invites to each EduKIT event. SUMMARY:EduKIT: Rethinking Report Writing
DESCRIPTION:For this EduKIT we will welcome Dr Susan Mandala\, Associate Professor (Research) in Pragmatic Stylistics at the University of Sunderland. She will talk about report writing… with a difference. \nRethinking Report Writing: An EduKIT presentation by Dr Susan Mandala \nWriting is hard. Few would disagree with that. But for educationalists\, writing matters. Whether it is reports for school improvement; evaluations of school governance; strategic plans for curriculum development; or expressions of our own professional ability\, writing affects lives. When writing works\, the right things get done\, the right projects get off the ground\, the best ideas come to the fore. Increasingly\, however\, we see writing that disappoints. Data is described rather than analysed; ideas are generated but not organised; conclusions are made but do not flow from the account presented. In this EduKIT\, I explore\, from my perspective as a linguist\, writer\, and writing consultant\, why such issues occur\, why conventional writing advice often fails us\, and how two techniques from qualitative research\, thematic coding and card-sorting\, are a way forward for writing in education. \nDr Susan Mandala is Associate Professor (Research) at the University of Sunderland and a professional Writing Consultant. As a specialist in stylistics\, the study of choice in language\, she has published two books (Language in Science Fiction and Fantasy: The Question of Style and Twentieth Century Drama as Ordinary Talk: Speaking Between the Lines) and numerous scholarly essays and journal articles. She is currently interested in the way linguistic approaches apply more widely in other disciplines and professions\, and her latest article ‘Stylistics\, popular culture\, and educational research: A systematised review and case study’\, is published in English Text Construction\, 16 (2): 144-168. As a Writing Consultant\, she delivers a range of workshops on diverse aspects of decision-making in writing. In addition to numerous writing workshops with staff and students at the University of Sunderland\, she has delivered workshops for the North of Tyne Combined Authority (Writing with Impact); the Holmeside Writers in Sunderland (Linguistic Knowledge for Creative Writers); Washington Academy (Answering a Write About Question); and Biddick Academy (Analysing Language in Literature: Finding Patterns and Planning Your Answer). \nFor a more information on Susan and a complete list of her publications\, you can find her on Linkedin. www.linkedin.com/in/susan-mandala-phd-6a94b7290 \nYou may also enjoy her blog on dissertation literature reviews\, A Guide for the Exasperated. https://litreviewsfortheexasperated.blogspot.com/ \nThe AoEA Education Keeping in Touch meetings (EduKITs) are for our members to listen to guest speakers\, share knowledge and best practice whilst also providing a forum for peer discussion & support. They occur fortnightly at 5.30pm Thursdays during term time. Reserve your place now. Look forward to seeing you there.

SUMMARY:EduKIT: Andy Hargreaves talks about The Age of Identity
DESCRIPTION:Professor Andy Hargreaves will be leading this EduKIT. He toured the UK talking about his new book\, The Age of Identity. If you did not have the chance to see him in person\, this would be a great session to attend and be able to ask your questions. \nWe are living in a time when identity is all the rage – literally as well as figuratively. How do we recognize and include all young people’s identities and honestly address the injustices and exclusions that many young people and their families face without getting drawn into culture wars? How can we do the right thing without fear of saying or doing the wrong thing?\nAndy will introduce his controversial new book with Dennis Shirley on The Age of Identity. It affirms that identity is an issue for everyone\, not just for “the others”. We should help young people develop positive senses of self and identity from the earliest years of school\, guide them through their different stages and life passages\, reach out across the generations\, and build bridges rather than put up walls between different identity groups.\nBut if we’re not careful\, we’ll fall into a massive identity trap. What we need is leadership that is courageous\, and yet collective and close to the action rather than heroic and remote. We need Leadership from the Middle\, as Andy’s other new book says\, not mandates from the top. \nAndy Hargreaves is Visiting Professor at the University of Ottawa\, Research Professor at Boston College in the US\, and Honorary Professor at Swansea University. He is an elected member of the US National Academy of Education\, former President of the International Congress of School Effectiveness and Improvement (2018-2020)\, adviser to the First Minister of Scotland & former Adviser to the Premier of Ontario.\nAndy is Canada’s 2023 Professor of the Year. He has published 35 books and has 8 Outstanding Writing Awards. An exceptional keynote speaker and workshop leader\, he has delivered invited addresses in more than 50 countries. He has been honoured in the UK\, Canada\, and the US for services to public education and educational research and is ranked by Education Week as the #16 scholar with the most influence on the US education policy debate. \nThe AoEA Education Keeping in Touch meetings (EduKITs) are for our members to listen to guest speakers\, share knowledge and best practice whilst also providing a forum for peer discussion & support.
