In Memory of Ian Kershaw FRSA

The Association of Education Advisers (AoEA) is deeply saddened by the passing of Ian Stewart Kershaw FRSA, an outstanding educational leader whose influence has shaped schools, communities and professional practice for more than sixty years.

Ian’s career spanned teaching, school leadership and major system-level roles. He served as a secondary principal and executive head teacher, before leading the East Durham Education Action Zone from 2000 to 2005. His later work included serving as managing director of Northern Education Associates, acting as a National Challenge Adviser for the Department for Education and leading the Northern Education Trust through a period of significant reform. In 2014 he was appointed Independent Chief Adviser to Birmingham City Council, guiding the investigation into the ‘Trojan Horse’ affair with courage, fairness and integrity.

Ian remained dedicated to public service long after retiring from full-time work. He supported school leaders across the North East, offered interim leadership to the Northern Leaders Trust and played an important role in higher education governance as a member of the University of Sunderland’s Board of Governors. His commitment to community life was equally profound, from founding the Fulwell Society to advocating nationally for adults with learning disabilities.

The AoEA was privileged to have Ian speak at our launch event, a moment we remember with gratitude. His reflections on ethical, well-informed educational advice continue to resonate deeply with our mission. Friends and colleagues often said that Ian carried Sunderland with him everywhere he went. He championed opportunity and ambition for the North East with unwavering pride.

Ian will be remembered for his wisdom, integrity and kindness. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
